In figure drawing, as well as doll making, the basic unit of measurement is called the 'head', which is the distance from the top (crown) of the head to the chin. This handy unit of measurement is reasonably standard, and has been used by artists for years to establish the proportions of the human figure.
In general, standard proportions that can give you a good idea of ideal proportions are:
Child Proportions an average adult person, is generally 7 to 7-1/2 heads tall, including the head.
The width from shoulder to shoulder is 3 heads width.
The distance from the hip to the toes is 4 heads.
The distance from the top of the head to the bottom of the chest is 2 heads.
The distance from the wrist to the end of the outstretched fingers of the hand is 1 head
Adult proportions The length from top to bottom of the buttocks is 1 head
The distance from the elbow to the end of outstretched fingers is 2 heads.
Remember that these proportions are for a basic standing figure, and changes in pose will affect the height.
